本庄敬以《北へ ―君への道―》(暫譯:向北――通往有你的路)一書獲選手塚獎,其後在《週刊少年Jump增刊號》正式出道。自1996年開始在《BUSINESS JUMP》上連載《SEED》,以世界形勢來看環境問題的特殊視角,在當時引起巨大的迴響。
近年本庄敬的作品多為料理漫畫,如《蒼太的菜刀》和《料理三國》等,其中連載超過10年的超人氣漫畫《蒼太的菜刀》在2017年又推出新版,擁有廣大的讀者。1992年起,為北海道壽都町所繪製的吉祥物風太君系列作品,也非常受歡迎。此外,和旭川市關係緊密的他,不僅與「北海道旭川動物園」合作繪製超人氣漫畫書《ASAHIYAMA-旭山動物園物語-》,從2010年至今,長期擔任旭川觀光大使。

Not only collaborated with the Hokkaido Asahikawa Zoo to create the popular comics Asahiyama Zoo Story, he has also served as Asahikawa city's tourism ambassador since 2010.
